Ingredients

Cake Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, softened Ensure butter is at room temperature.
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs At room temperature.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk At room temperature.
  • 1/4 cup sour cream At room temperature.
Glaze Ingredients
  • 1.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk Add more for a thinner glaze.
  • 1 tablespoon melted unsalted butter
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or a Bundt style doughnut cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  5. Add the dry ingredients in two or three additions, alternating with the buttermilk. Mix gently just until combined. Fold in the sour cream to avoid overmixing.
  6. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
Baking
  1. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the cake is golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  2. Let the cake rest in the pan for about 10 minutes, then carefully transfer it to a wire rack. Allow it to cool for another 15 to 20 minutes.
Glazing
  1. Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, melted butter, vanilla, and salt until smooth. For a thinner glaze, add more milk. For a thicker coating, add more powdered sugar.
  2. Pour the glaze generously over the slightly warm cake, allowing it to drip naturally down the sides.
  3. Let the glaze sit for 10 to 15 minutes before slicing. Serve at room temperature.

Notes

Make sure all your ingredients are at room temperature before you start. Don't overmix the batter after adding the dry ingredients. For a fun twist, you can add chocolate chips or chopped nuts into the batter for extra flavor and texture.
