Ingredients

For the Beef Patties
  • 300 to 350 g ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
For the Sandwich Assembly
  • 4 slices rye bread or sourdough
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese or cheddar or American
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter (plus more for bread)
  • 1 tbsp oil (for onions)
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
  • 1 tbsp ketchup (optional)
  • 1 tsp mustard (optional)

Method

Cook the Onions
  1. Heat oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions with a pinch of salt and cook slowly for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and soft. Set aside.
Prepare the Beef Patties
  1. Divide ground beef into 2 thin patties (slightly larger than bread slices). Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook in a hot skillet for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
Assemble the Sandwiches
  1. Butter one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side, layer cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and top with another bread slice (buttered side facing out).
Cook the Sandwiches
  1. Heat skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook sandwiches for 3 to 5 minutes per side, pressing lightly. Flip carefully and cook until bread is golden and cheese is melted.
Serve
  1. Slice in half and serve hot with fries or pickles.

Notes

Store leftover patties in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or microwave.
