Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage Fresh sausage for best flavor
  • 1 package refrigerated crescent roll dough or puff pastry sheet Use whichever you prefer
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese Freshly shredded cheese works best
  • 1 large egg, beaten For brushing on twists

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Lightly flour your work surface if needed.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until it is fully browned, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks. Drain any excess grease and let it cool.
  4. Unroll the dough and, if using crescent dough, press the seams together to form a solid sheet.
Assembly
  1. Sprinkle the cooked sausage evenly over the dough and then top it with shredded cheddar cheese.
  2. Fold the dough in half and press the edges together to seal.
  3. Cut the folded dough into 24 strips, twist each strip, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Brush the twists with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  2. Once done, let them cool for 5 minutes, and they are ready to serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes
