Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 pounds white potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced Use any variety of white potatoes, like Yukon gold or red, if desired.
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese Using a good quality Gruyere cheese enhances flavor.
  • 1.5 cups heavy cream This adds creaminess to the dish.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened Used to butter the baking dish and dot on top.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly butter an 8-inch square baking dish with a little of the softened butter.
  2. Slice the potatoes very thinly, about 1/8 inch thick, for even cooking and neat layers.
Layering and Baking
  1. Layer one third of the potatoes in the prepared dish, sprinkle with one third of the Gruyere cheese, and drizzle with one third of the cream.
  2. Repeat the layering two more times, then dot the top with the remaining butter.
  3. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 40 minutes, until the potatoes are nearly tender.
  4. Remove the foil and continue baking for 20 to 25 minutes more, until the top is deeply golden, the cheese is bubbling, and a knife slides easily through the center.
Serving
  1. Let the potatoes rest for 15 to 20 minutes before cutting into squares and serving.

Notes

These potato squares can be served as a side with steak, chicken, or on their own as a hearty snack. Garnish with fresh herbs or black pepper for added flavor. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
