Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced Ensure potatoes are sliced thinly for even cooking.
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) French onion soup Can substitute with cream of mushroom or cheddar cheese soup.
  • 1 cup heavy cream Use gluten-free heavy cream if necessary.
  • 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese Can replace with cheddar or mozzarella cheese for different flavors.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F and lightly grease an 8-inch square glass baking dish.
  2. Arrange the thinly sliced potatoes evenly in the prepared baking dish, spreading them into fairly level layers.
  3. Pour the French onion soup evenly over the potatoes, making sure some of the onion strands settle down between the slices.
  4. Drizzle the heavy cream over the top, then gently press the potatoes down with the back of a spoon so the liquid runs through the layers.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  6. Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded Swiss cheese evenly over the top, and return the dish to the oven for 20 to 25 minutes more, until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and lightly browned.
  7. Let the bake rest for 10 minutes before serving so the creamy onion sauce can settle and the slices hold together better.

Notes

This dish can be served alone or as a side to roasted meats, grilled chicken, or hearty salads. Garnish with fresh herbs like chives or parsley for an extra touch. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. To reheat, warm in the oven or microwave until heated through.
