Hamburger Steaks with Brown Gravy

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg , beaten
  • 1/2 tsp sal t
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion , thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all -purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Method
 

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder.
  2. Shape the mixture into four oval patties, approximately 3/4-inch thick.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Sear patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned, then remove from skillet and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.
  7. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping the bottom of the pan to release browned bits.
  8. Bring gravy to a simmer and return patties to the skillet.
  9. Lower heat and simmer for 5-8 minutes until the gravy thickens and patties reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
