Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 0.5 cup yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic , minced
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 large eg g
  • 1 tbsp wate r

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef and diced onions until the beef is fully cooked and onions are translucent, approximately 7 to 9 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet; cook for 2 minutes, then remove from heat and drain excess fat.
  4. Allow the beef mixture to cool to room temperature to prevent the pastry from melting prematurely.
  5. Unroll the thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface and cut each sheet into four equal squares.
  6. Place approximately 3 tablespoons of the beef mixture onto the center of each square and top with 2 tablespoons of shredded cheddar cheese.
  7. Fold the pastry over the filling to form a triangle or rectangle and crimp the edges firmly with a fork to seal.
  8. Whisk the egg and water together in a small bowl to create an egg wash, then brush the top of each pocket.
  9. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and deep golden brown.
  10. Let the pockets rest for 5 minutes before serving.
