Method
Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 190 degrees C (375 degrees F). Lightly grease a 9x9 inch (23x23 cm) baking dish.
- In a bowl, mix the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, ketchup, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until just combined.
- Press the meat mixture evenly into the baking dish.
Cooking the Potatoes
- In a pot, place the cubed potatoes in salted water and boil for 15 to 18 minutes until fork-tender. Drain well.
- Mash the potatoes with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.
- Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the meat layer in the baking dish.
Baking
- Sprinkle cheddar cheese on top and then add crumbled cooked bacon.
- Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the meat is fully cooked and the cheese is melted. Optionally, broil for 2 to 3 minutes for a golden top.
- Let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Top with sour cream and chopped green onions if desired.
Notes
Make sure not to overmix the beef mixture; it should be combined just enough to hold together. You can customize the cheese used or add extra spices to the meat for more flavor. Using leftover mashed potatoes works great for this recipe.
