Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a wire rack.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
Mix by hand until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat to maintain a tender texture.
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into patties approximately 1-inch thick.
Place patties on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 71°C (160°F).
Place one slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and return to the oven for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is fully melted.
Remove from oven and let rest for 3 minutes before serving.
