Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1.75 cups buttermilk, room temperature Can substitute with regular milk.
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, melted For best flavor, do not substitute with margarine.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking dish if desired.
  2. Pour the melted butter into the bottom of the baking dish, spreading it evenly to coat the entire base.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  4. Add the buttermilk and stir gently until a thick, sticky dough forms. Avoid overmixing; a few small lumps are perfectly fine.
  5. Carefully spoon the dough directly over the melted butter in the baking dish. Use a spatula to gently spread it into an even layer without mixing it into the butter.
  6. Using a butter knife or bench scraper, score the dough into 9 equal squares.
Baking
  1. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the tops are deeply golden brown and the edges are crisp.
  2. Remove from the oven and let the biscuits rest for about 5 minutes before serving. Cut along the scored lines and lift the biscuits from the pan.

Notes

Serve warm with butter, honey, or jam. Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to a week. For a twist, add shredded cheese or herbs to the dough.
