Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet or 9x13-inch pan with foil, then lightly grease the foil.
- Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer, edge to edge, over the bottom of the pan.
Cooking
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Stir until the mixture comes to a full boil, then let it boil for 3 minutes, stirring gently, until thickened and smooth.
- Pour the hot toffee evenly over the crackers and spread it quickly so the crackers are covered.
- Bake for 5 minutes, until the topping is bubbly all over.
- Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot surface. Let them sit for 2 to 3 minutes to soften, then spread the melted chocolate into an even layer.
Cooling and Serving
- Let the pan cool at room temperature for about 20 minutes, then chill until firm.
- Break or cut into pieces and serve.
Notes
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for about a week, or refrigerate for a few weeks for a firmer texture. For extra crunch, you can add chopped nuts on top of the chocolate.
